This great new SEMA Best New Product Award for the Atomic LS by MSD can be ordered from Marken Performance, Kitchener. These Best New Product Awards are given out by the industry group every year before the start of their trade show in Las Vegas, Nevada. There are a number of classes for the new products, including Street Rod/Custom Car which is what the Atomic LS system won.
Covers for the Ignition Coils also available. For more info ClickHere For SEMA Video.
Atomic LS incorporates the electronics into the fuel rails of the system! The fuel helps keep the electronics cool. There’s no bulky ECU to mount and therefore no wires to route to and from – it’s all on the engine, hidden in plain sight. This innovative design and advanced technology drastically reduces the wiring of an LS fuel injection system. Instead of guiding a massive loom of wires from the ECU to the injectors, coil packs and associated engine sensors, the Atomic LS requires only a short length of wires that run from the fuel rail assembly to each specific sensor as the EFI is in the Fuel rails (all with factory connectors in place)---see cool cut away in video. Not only does that save you time and aggravation from wiring, but it improves the overall cleanliness of the engine compartment. Extended covers available to cover ign coils.
The injectors of the throttle body can support approximately 625 horsepower on naturally aspirated applications.
“It wasn’t something that was easy to do – most late-model computers are quite large,” explains MSD’s Erik Brock. “It was a challenge, but we were able to use newer technologies, smaller processors, and smaller components. Our use of CAN-Bus technology also allows us to communicate from the two rails to the handheld unit to the power control with a minimum of wires rather than having a hard wire for each component going back and forth.”
“Anyone’s that done an LS1 conversion, whether using an aftermarket harness or a factory harness that’s been modified, knows that there’s a rather large harness that you have to route throughout the car, and a bulky computer that you need to bolt somewhere. The intention here was to make it so the customer can take his factory fuel rails off, bolt our fuel rails on, plug the connections into the local sensors, give it power and ground, answer a few questions [on the hand-held controller], and he’s ready to go. It takes a lot of the intimidation away from it for the novice user. And for the more advanced user, there are options for them to play with as well,” he continued.
The Power Module is compact and uses a CAN-Bus to communicate with the electronics integrated into the fuel rails. High current connections like the fuel pump circuit run through the Power Module. Each fuel rail bank incorporates OEM connectors that plug into the various engine components like the coils, fuel injectors, and those for the crankshaft and camshaft sensors. The rail modules also need to be grounded to the block through the pre-installed ground wires for proper operation.
Each rail inlet will accept a -6AN or -8AN fitting (-6AN fittings are provided in the system) and are internally sized to match the -8AN dimensions. If your LS engine project is going to require more fuel than the Atomic EFI’s rails can provide, then the system is not for you. But for the majority of the hot rod and resto-mod marketplace, the thousand-horsepower limit probably won’t be an issue.
For Nitrous fans, a wet system (one that supplies its own fuel to compensate for nitrous) must be incorporated. From the Atomic handheld monitor you'll be able to program a target air/fuel ratio that will be used when the nitrous is activated. There is also a timing setting that will retard the timing during nitrous activation as well. Not only do you have the ability to run the nitrous system or push some boost; the Power Module also includes a pair of rev-limit settings; one through fuel, and one through ignition. There is also an optional 2-Step Rev Limiter that can be installed and used on the starting line if you plan to drag race your machine. This is activated through the dark blue wire in the module’s harness.
Boost: the throttle body incorporates a 2-bar MAP sensor and can manage up to 14-psi of boost. There is value for a target air/fuel ratio during boost on the handheld monitor as well as a timing retard that is based off timing per pound of boost.
The system allows you to program different temperatures to activate two separate cooling fans, and advance or retard the ignition timing by up to ten degrees over the factory setting. It’s also compatible with OE Variable Cam Timing Control. You even get the option to install a Check Engine Light! All you need is a simple bulb connected to switched 12V power on one side and the light green wire on the ground side, and if there is a malfunction in the Atomic EFI, the ground will be supplied through the wire to illuminate the lamp.
To program the Atomic LS, simply plug in the Handheld Programmer into the Power Module and toggle through the menu screens with the joystick. Scroll up and down through a few easy parameters and your engine will be running in to no time. The Handheld can be unplugged and stowed away, or leave it connected to view a list of items in real time as the engine runs! No PC, no software and no experience necessary.
The Atomic EFI system received C.A.R.B EXEMPT E.O. Number D-722 which permits the system to be installed in place of the factory carburetor on 1987 and older GM passenger cars and trucks originally powered by a V8 engine. This Executive Order also means the Atomic EFI system provides "reasonable basis" for satisfying the anti-tampering requirements of the Federal Clean Air Act, thus allowing its use in all other States.
This is terrific news for enthusiasts with an '87 and older GM car or truck as it means they can finally do away with their old carburetor and take advantage of the drivability benefits of a modern, self-learning EFI system such as quick starts, consistent idle and smooth power throughout all driving conditions.
During thorough testing it was confirmed that the Atomic system did not reduce the effectiveness of the applicable vehicle pollution control systems and therefore was granted an exemption from the prohibitions of Section 27156 of the California Vehicle Code for 1987 and older General Motors passenger cars and pickups originally equipped with a V8 engine and carburetor. MSD will supply an information label with the E.O. Number and details that must be affixed on the vehicle for inspection purposes.

“Our LS multiple spark coils will fit in place of the stock GM LS coils and connect directly to the factory connectors,” says Peterson. MSD offers a line of MSD Ignition coil brackets that simplifies even the most difficult coil LS coil mounting. “They’re crafted from aluminum and are made for the specific purpose of keeping your coil braced.” MSD was able to design an advanced circuit that operates with the factory electronics of the LS engine controls while producing a higher output spark. Not only do you get a higher voltage spark, but the coil will deliver multiple sparks. According to Peterson, “This results in improved throttle response, smooth idle and quick starts, plus increased high rpm performance.”
There are three types of housings for the MSD Coils: LS1/LS6 Engines # 82858; LS2/LS7 Engines # 82878; LQ Truck Series # 82868
