Spectre now has finned polished aluminum universal single pass automatic transmission coolers that comes in 3 lengths (12” #5466, 15” #5467, 18” #5468). Spectre Performance transmission coolers include two 3/8 inch NPT fittings. These can be mounted anywhere, including under the car on the side of the frame.
An automatic transmission is designed to keep an engine's revolutions per minute (RPMs) within a usable range and transmit the power from the engine to the drive wheels. Stop and go driving, heavy acceleration, and towing, force an automatic transmission to work harder than usual and this hard work will produce extra heat. One way to prevent premature transmission wear and extend the life of automatic transmission fluid is by incorporating an auxiliary automatic transmission fluid cooler.
According to the Automatic Transmission Rebuilders Association, 90% of ALL transmission failures are caused by overheating. As a rule of thumb, every 20 degree increase in operating temperature above 175 degrees F cuts the life of the fluid in half! On most newer vehicles, the automatic transmission fluid is cooled by a small heat exchanger inside the bottom or end tank of the radiator. Hot ATF from the transmission circulates through a short loop of pipe and is thus "cooled." Cooling is a relative term here, however, because the radiator itself may be running at anywhere from 180 to 220 degrees F.!
